What is Pedigree Central?
Pedigree Central is your Internet portal for pedigrees. Just click on your favorite breed, and you will be transported directly to the website where you can get pedigrees.
What does it cost?
It costs nothing to use. The breeders who sponsor their breed through Pedigree Central do it because they care about their breed. This is a service by breeders for breeders.
My breed doesn't have a sponsor. I have the breeding records, can I be a sponsor?
Yes, you can.
What do I need to do?
You must have (or obtain) your own website with CGI capability. Then you can install the pedigree database software on your website, and upload your breeding records database.
I don't have a website with CGI capability. How do I get one?
If you have a "static" website, you can ask your Internet Service Provider (ISP) if they can upgrade you to CGI capability. There is usually an additional monthly fee for this privilege. If you do not have a website now, or your ISP cannot upgrade you to CGI capability, try contacting one of the following ISPs:

All this web site stuff is a bit beyond me. Can I get help?
Please read the online instructions and FAQ. If you have a short question that is not answered by them, contact me and I'll try to answer. If you need extensive help, please consult a web design professional.
Why are you doing
this for free? Doesn’t it cost you
money?
In
1985, my mother and I started compiling the database for our own
breed-of-interest (Belgian Sheepdogs).
Our motivation was to collect and cross-reference real breeding
records to counteract a lot of disinformation spread by some breeders who are
motivated mostly by profit. I am a
computer programmer by training, so I thought that computerizing the data
would make it easier to maintain. Over
the course of the last 20+ years, that software has gone through various
incarnations, with its first debut on the web in 1998. Suggestions from other breeders encouraged
me to make it more widely available. I have done this even though the
webserver costs me about $50 per month, not to mention the time I spend
helping others get their own websites up and running. It is my intention to continue to make this
website and the software available for free to promote the spread of good
information. To defray my costs, I am now hosting advertisements. I also welcome donations from anyone
feeling so inclined. |

Here's what people are saying about Pedigree Central!
"One sign of the great benefit that you have provided to our breed is that through your efforts in making this program available to me, that Dr. Goldstein, a researcher at Cornell, was able to trace his Keeshond genetic testing and develop at test for the PHPT gene in Keeshond... He made extensive use of my website Keeshond database in his research." -- Steve Dworkin, Greykees Keeshonden
"Pedigree Central is nothing short of absolutely wonderful. After typing out far too many pedigrees, I went looking for a way of putting a pedigree database together and getting it onto my web site. I was stunned to find what it would cost for a web developer to do the work for me. With Jim's help, I now have a pedigree look up that is much, much better than what I originally had in mind. It looks terrific, it's very easy for visitors to my site to use and incredibly easy for me to maintain. Not only was it free, Jim patiently helped me get it up and running. I would happily recommend this service to anyone; thank you once again." -- Petra Davidson, Sparkling Acres Appaloosas: http://www.sparklingacres.co.nz/ New Zealand
"The wirehaired pointing griffon is small gene pool and it is essential for breeders to share pedigree and testing information. The lifetime work of the foundation wirehaired pointing griffon breeder in the United States can now be shared for the benefit of the whole breed. Our deepest appreciation to Jim Trethewey for making a lifelong dream a reality with his pedigree program. Jim went far above and beyond the call of duty to help us get this database available on the website." -- Carol Ptak, Herrenhausen Sporting Dogs webmaster
"On the web, we are using your free Pedigree Central application for this facility. The pedigrees are maintained by BreedMate's Ped/X, which then generates the data files for your web application. [...] I'm very pleased with this combination. As a developer, I've found the Pedigree Central Perl code easy to follow. It certainly worked 100% "out of the box," and my customizations for our club's special needs have been easy to do. [...] As a non-profit organization supported by donations and run entirely by volunteers, we very much appreciate your making the Pedigree database application available at no cost. It allows us to continue our traditional Book of Titleholders at very little cost to the club's members." -- Jim Moen, Puli Club of America Webmaster
"Thanks for making such a great easy-to-use web interface!" -- Melissa Sworab
"I spent days manually creating dozens of HTML pedigrees, with no hyperlinks, and discovered to my horror what a nightmare it was to keep track of updates and modifications when even one related dog was added to the database. I knew there had to be a better way and I found it in Alfirin Technologies Dynamic Pedigree Generator. In short order my entire database was online, upgraded on the fly and with dynamic hyperlinks. This software would be a bargain at any price. But at FREE it is an amazing gift. Many thanks." -- Mike Davidson: www.chinese-sharpei.com
"It has been a dream of mine to put the South African Arabian Database on line and after a few years our Database is finally complete. I bought a program from Breeders assistant which is phenomenal and contacted Jim. His response time was that of an employee of mine in hot water and went all the way to help. I think his great success is his passion and desire to help others, as he has been there before. He Even refused financial assistance! Jim has answered all our email and even spent time making changes to scripts, THANK YOU. In a short while we be online with our database, take a look." -- Greg Miles
"I just wanted to let you know, that the "Pedigree Software" you wrote is excellent and I daily use a site that uses it. :) I am so thankful you made the software. :) Thank you sooooo much !!" -- Kristi Thayer
"Hey just wanted to let you know, Jim, that the software used to create the Online Pedigree Database for Australian Shepherds, located at www.hrdndog.com, is outstanding as has provided the community of Australian Shepherd breeders and owners with an invaluable resource. Indirectly, your work has helped the breed in general and I just wanted to say THANKS. You probably have no idea how much this means, and to how many people! Great job." -- Lisa Giroux
"Thank you so very much for helping me with this!! You are terriffic!!" -- Helen Park
"I've been looking at pedigrees and indulging in doggy stuff. It is a great service for us Belgian folks! THANK YOU!!!" -- Lorra Miller
"PERFECT! Thanks a million." -- Kris Willison
"It's all working wonderfully!!! Jim, I'm copying Kris on this. You two should be very thrilled with what you have done! You have created a masterpiece!! I appreciate the effort that you must have put into this and I know that there are many, many pedigree lovers out there that will just be blown away by this!!" -- Roxy Hayes
"I have recieved many excellent comments on the site. Several have asked about the script that I used. I have referred them to your site." -- Ray Plummer

"I want to thank you for providing this wonderful software. The Irish Water Spaniel community all over the world is very satisfied with it." -- Michael Roeterdink
"Wow, excellent work!" -- Brad LaBroad

"Thank you very much for your Pedigree Website Package." -- Tiina Räsänen
"Thank you so much! Your generosity is deeply appreciated!" -- Patricia Hampton
"Wow, thanks!" -- Anne McCulloch & Denise Clark
"I have been using your package for nearly two years having tried similar ones, I can honestly say yours is the best by a mile, and the service and help I get from you is brilliant. Thank you for a very professional service, and best of luck for the future." -- Rex Orrin, Nirrochex Akitas UK
"Very nice work, well written and easy to work with. Spent some time customizing it to match the appearance and layout of our site. Very much enjoyed working with the program. I also spent some time looking at alternatives to BreedMate. I actually downloaded and worked with six other demos. In the end BreedMate won out, and one big reason is the integration possible with your program. I really couldn't find anything else that could beat the combination. And the Pedigree with links makes a fantastic research tool that I know a lot of people will benefit from. It is so much better than the sites that only generate a pedigree for one dog at a time and then emails it to you." -- Mike Murray
"I had an idea one day and thought, it would be neat to have a web based pedigree database. As I thought more about it, I realized that it was well beyond my reach, so to speak. Since the idea lingered, I emailed Jim Seltzer, whose selfless generosity made his pedigree program available and free. I asked Jim Seltzer if my idea could be done with his program. His response was, 'Rather than trying to adapt the pedigree program to your needs I suggest you take a look at Jim Trethewey's free software at http://www.alfirin.net/pedigree-central/. It might be better suited to what you have in mind. Take a look at several of the linked pedigree database web pages. Some collect the database information directly from an e-form.' I have found Jim Tretheway to be equally generous and selfless, this experience has bolstered my joy in being an American. Thank you Jim more than I can express." -- Rustler, River, Swamp and Flatwoods Sacred Fraternal Order of the Society of Professional hog Doggers (PhD)
"It's not surprising that Alfirin's system is the most popular web pedigree database. Good work, well documented and very rapid responses from Jim when needed. Very professional. And its free." -- Colin Manning, Breeders Assistant Software
"Great software. Working with Jim Trethewey was a pleasure. Responses both quick and helpful. He even provided changes to allow multiple breeds on a single host. His simple, straight forward database formats made it easy to include a function in K9-Ped to output the required pedigree and breeding files." -- Jim Andrews, K9-Ped
"There are a number of Web Pedigree Generators available on the net and most are free. One of the best is from Alfirin Technologies." -- Breed Mate
